Rows make small seedlings easy to recognize, but they are not compulsory. A wide bed can also hold short rows, offset plants, or labelled blocks as long as mature spacing and access are respected.
- Copy the crop, cultivar, sowing date, and packet spacing onto a weatherproof label and your Garden Journal.
- Reuse smooth plant labels or make new wooden ones. Do not cut brittle window blinds or unknown plastic; sharp edges and old coatings are not worth the risk.
- An adult can push stakes or labels into hard ground while checking that no irrigation line or utility is below.
- Mark a straight row with taut twine if that helps, then remove or clearly flag low string so nobody trips.
- Leave paths wide enough to kneel, carry a watering can, and reach every plant without stepping into the bed.
Put labels where they will not be buried by mulch or shaded by leaves. A plot map is the best backup when a curious crow rearranges the signs.
