Show rules, classes, dates, and entry methods can change every year. Get the current schedule from the show organizer and treat it as the final authority whenever it differs from this general checklist.
A Week Before
- Read every rule for your class. Note the number, size, naming, container, and entry-tag requirements.
- Make a checklist for each entry. If a class asks for three matching blooms, identify several possible flowers in case one is damaged.
- Prepare stable, clean containers and a safe way to carry them.
- Get entry tags or confirm the current online entry process. Ask an adult before putting personal information on a tag or form.
The Day Before
- Use your checklist to count the flowers, vegetables, containers, and tags you need.
- Harvest at the time recommended for that plant and start conditioning cut flowers promptly.
- Pick a spare specimen when the rules allow it.
- Gently clean vegetables according to the current show schedule; some classes may require soil or natural bloom to remain.
- Assemble arrangements and keep them cool, stable, and away from pets.
- Pack a pencil, clipboard, spare labels, paper towel, and plant mister. Keep knives, wire cutters, and sharp florist tools in an adult's separate kit.
On Show Day
- Check water levels, but do not overfill containers before transport.
- Pack entries so they cannot tip, roll, or crush one another. See Transporting Plants.
- Bring the current schedule and leave plenty of time before entries close.
- At the venue, follow the steward's instructions. Ask before replacing a damaged specimen or changing an entry.
- Wash your hands before eating, especially after handling soil, plant sap, or show materials.
Enjoy the Show
Look at the other entries, ask gardeners how they grew them, and be proud of finishing a project. A ribbon is only one part of the day.
Afterward, take your containers and tools home. Ask an organization before offering flowers; hospitals and care homes may have allergy, infection-control, or delivery rules.
